As we enter the month of October, many of us are excited for Halloween and all the other delights that Fall brings with it. However, this month is special for animals too, especially those within shelter. After all, it’s Adopt a Dog month! Which is why we thought it’d be a great idea to cover some pet adoption tips.

During this special month, we should all take some time to consider what we could be doing to help the many dogs stuck within shelters. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t give some thought to the many cats in shelters too!

While adoption is the best way to help sheltered animals, it’s paramount that you ensure that you have the space, time, and energy to raise an animal before you adopt. Therefore, in this article, we’re going to cover what you need to consider before adopting a pet.

Keep reading for some great pet adoption tips!

Why Adoption is Sorely
Needed

Around 6.5 million animals enter American animal shelters
each year. Devastatingly, 1.5 million of these animals are euthanized. Many of
these animals are perfectly healthy, but because these shelters are
consistently overburdened and overcrowded, they have to be euthanized to make
space.

It’s particularly relevant to animals that are of senior age
or that may have pre-existing medical conditions. These pets are usually
difficult to rehome, as many families prefer young animals.

However, senior pets with and without medical issues can
still be very fulfilling companions. They’re just as deserving of a loving home
and family.

We believe that no animal deserves to die simply due to a
simple lack of space. Adoption, in a very real sense, saves lives. Especially
for those pets that may be old or with health conditions. Due to this, it’d be
amazing if many of us could help out by adopting!

Pet Adoption Tips – Important Considerations

The goal of pet adoption is to provide these animals with a
loving, permanent home. If you don’t think you can provide this, then adoption
isn’t a good option for you. It’s very important that you consider whether you
have the time or space to adopt a pet before rushing into any decisions.

Therefore, it’s a great idea to consider every aspect of adopting a pet before committing to an adoption. You don’t want to take an animal out of a shelter just to put them straight back in! Ensure you consider their energy levels, grooming requirements, level of training, health, and so on.

Many shelters are happy to work with you, helping you to find an animal that is right for you. Be sure to make use of them and their expertise, as it will make things a lot easier!

If you feel like you can’t take on an animal currently,
that’s okay! There’s plenty of other ways you can help shelters, such as
through donations. Click
here for examples of items many animal shelters are in need of.

Happy Adopt a Dog Month!

Adoptions go a long way to helping every companion animal throughout America live a long and fulfilling life. If you feel like you could take on a new pet, please consider adopting instead of buying!

There are plenty of sites that can help match a prospective
pet with your current situation and preferences. See below:

PetFinder

ASPCA

Adopt-a-Pet

If you find yourself adopting a pet this Fall, remember that
we at Groomit are more than happy to help care for them! We’d love to provide
your newly-adopted pet with a real taste of luxury. Feel free to take a look
through our services to see how we

Black cats are steeped in superstition, which doesn’t help them to find a home. Some people even advise animal shelters not to perform any adoptions for black cats the entire month of October! Sadly they often become victims of ritualistic abuse.

As Groucho Marx said in the immortal words “a black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.”

According to Dr. Emily Weiss, Vice President of Research and Development at The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals “There are all sorts of myths out there, but there is no spike in cruelty towards cats during Halloween.” She encourages animal shelters to take advantage of Halloween to promote black cats and help debunk the myth.

“We certainly do not have any hesitancy about adopting black cats at Halloween,” says Deborah Wood, animal services manager for Washington County in an interview.

Casey Elise Christopher Los Angeles-based photographer has done an amazing job on photographing these amazing feelings and their unique personalities for West Los Angeles Animal Services and Milo’s Sanctuary back in 2015.

October 29th is now celebrated as black cat appreciation day! Enjoy your cats & keep them well groomed, whatever shade, color or breed they may be. Please have a safe & happy Halloween!

FAQ’s

Q: How does Petfinder work?
A: Petfinder is an online platform that connects potential adopters with adoptable pets. It works by aggregating listings from various animal shelters, rescue organizations, and individual pet owners. Users can search for pets based on their location, preferences, and desired characteristics, and then contact the organization or owner directly to inquire about the adoption process.

Q: Can I adopt a specific breed through Petfinder?
A: Yes, Petfinder allows you to search for specific breeds of pets. You can filter your search based on breed, age, size, and other preferences to find the type of pet you are interested in adopting. Keep in mind that the availability of specific breeds may vary depending on your location and the rescues/shelters listed on the platform.

Q: Are the pets listed on Petfinder vaccinated and spayed/neutered?
A: The vaccination and spay/neuter status of the pets listed on Petfinder can vary depending on the organization or individual posting the listing. Some pets may already be vaccinated and spayed/neutered, while others may require these procedures to be done after adoption. It’s important to inquire about the specific pet’s medical history and any pending veterinary procedures during the adoption process.

Q: How much does it cost to adopt a pet through Petfinder?
A: The cost of adopting a pet through Petfinder can vary depending on the organization or individual listing the pet. Adoption fees typically cover expenses such as vaccinations, spaying/neutering, microchipping, and sometimes even initial veterinary check-ups. It’s advisable to check the individual pet listings or contact the organization/owner directly to inquire about the adoption fees.

Q: Can I find pets other than cats and dogs on Petfinder?
A: Yes, Petfinder is not limited to cats and dogs. While cats and dogs are the most commonly listed pets, you can also find other types of pets such as rabbits, birds, reptiles, small mammals, and even horses on the platform. The availability of different types of pets may vary depending on your location and the rescues/shelters listed on Petfinder.
