Debunking the Myth Adopt a cat for Halloween
Black cats are steeped in superstition, which doesn’t help them to find a home. Some people even advise animal shelters not to perform any adoptions for black cats the entire month of October! Sadly they often become victims of ritualistic abuse.
As Groucho Marx said in the immortal words “a black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.”
According to Dr. Emily Weiss, Vice President of Research and Development at The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals “There are all sorts of myths out there, but there is no spike in cruelty towards cats during Halloween.” She encourages animal shelters to take advantage of Halloween to promote black cats and help debunk the myth.
“We certainly do not have any hesitancy about adopting black cats at Halloween,” says Deborah Wood, animal services manager for Washington County in an interview.
Casey Elise Christopher Los Angeles-based photographer has done an amazing job on photographing these amazing feelings and their unique personalities for West Los Angeles Animal Services and Milo’s Sanctuary back in 2015.
October 29th is now celebrated as black cat appreciation day! Enjoy your cats & keep them well groomed, whatever shade, color or breed they may be. Please have a safe & happy Halloween!
