How to be prepare for newborn puppies?

There are many easy ways on how to be prepared for newborn puppies, is exciting but is important to have all ready for that moment.  Taking care of the details will ensure that the mother and her puppies are healthy and secure.

1. Take the mother to de Vet

As soon as you find out that your dog is expecting is very important to get her checked by a veterinarian. If you already have one that knows and checks your dog frequently better. The doctor will examine your dog and make sure she is in conditions to be a mom. Know that gestation is 63 days long, you should also need to keep the vet updated about the signs and notify if there are no signs of labor after a few days the due date.

2. Find the correct whelping box

Find the correct size for your dog, this nesting box gets you prepared for the newborn puppies keeping them safely contained, protected from cold and keep them all together at the same place. You can buy this box at a pet shop or use a cardboard box, just make sure is not too tall do your dog can get in and out.

3. Cover the box with papers and blankets

Insert a layer of paper at the bottom and some blankets for comfort. Put the box in a quiet place and make sure you can cover it for the whelping, sometimes that helps the dog to feel safe. Encourage the pregnant female to sleep and sit in the box regularly.

4. Feed her frequently

To be prepared for the newborn puppies is also prepare your dog. Make sure she has water and food available all the time as her appetite increases after some weeks of pregnancy.

5. Keep the daily walks

Is important to keep your dog strong for the big day, keeping her daily walks decrease the possibilities of risks. Also, make sure she doesn’t socialize with strange dogs to avoid getting hurt or contracting infections.

6. Be aware of signs of labor

Is good for you to know when the puppies are on the way, make sure you notice the signs such as loss of appetite and vomiting this may happen a few hours before the birth.

Your dog knows how to take care of herself she has natural instincts, but keep an eye on the birth just in case and if you see something is going wrong do not hesitate to call your vet. If all goes well try not to bother her too much is important to leave her through the process that might take several hours depending on the breed.  Your dog might turn a bit protective and aggressive with her pups, be patient if that happens, this will change after a while.

8. Leave the Mom and the Puppies bond

Once you make sure all the puppies and your dog are safe, clean the box so it’s comfortable and place it in a warm place. Also, keep food and water near for the mother.
